Foster FAQs

Where do the foster dogs come from?

Nirvana Animal Rescue takes in dogs from a variety of situations and locations. We take in dogs from local animal shelters and shelters in rural areas all over the country.

What do foster families need to provide?

Foster families are responsible for providing:

  • A healthy and safe environment for their foster dogs

  • Transportation to and from adoption events and veterinary appointments as needed

  • Socialization and cuddle time to help teach dogs positive family and pet relationships

  • Lots of exercise and mental stimulation

How long can foster dogs be left alone for?

It varies depending on the dog. Adult dogs can be left for a maximum of eight consecutive hours in their crate alone. Young puppies should only be left alone for a maximum of four consecutive hours. The foster coordinator will work with you to determine which type of foster dog is the best fit for your lifestyle.

Can I foster a dog if I don’t have a fenced-in yard?

Yes! Certain dogs may require a fenced-in yard for their safety, but most dogs do not require one. We just ask that you supervise your dog at all times outdoors, and always keep him/her on the leash on walks.

How long will I need to foster the dog?

Ideally, foster dogs stay in their foster home until they get adopted. We unfortunately can’t predict how long or short that time period may be.

What if I want to adopt my foster dog?

If you want to adopt your foster dog, you must let the foster coordinator know immediately. Once the dog is available for adoption, we cannot hold the dog for any interested adopters, including fosters.

What if my foster dog is not working out?

You are not required to continue fostering if you feel it is not working out. However, we may not have an immediate alternate foster home available for the dog. We will work on moving your foster dog out as soon as possible, but ask for your understanding and patience.

What happens if I need to go out of town while fostering?

Please notify the foster coordinator at least two weeks before you plan to go out of town so we can find a temporary foster home. You can leave your foster dog with a pet sitter as long as they have signed our foster agreement and spoken to our foster coordinator beforehand. You are always welcome to take your foster dog out of town with you, but ask that you alert the foster coordinator beforehand.
